Amateur wrestling looking to MMA and submission wrestling to increase popularity
The Japan Wrestling Federation is experimenting with adding "Pankration" as a new category of competition. The rules sound, more or less, like submission wrestling rules (no striking, but submisisons are allowed), and Pride has thrown its support behind the events.
This looks like a good move. As MMA becomes more popular and attracts a greater share of the young male audience, these competitions can give the Japan Wrestling Federation a way to tap into that audience.
Who knows? If Japan's competitions take off, maybe USA Wrestling will sanction submission wreslting. Submission wrestling would see bigger talent pools and more organized events, and USA Wrestling might find a way to grow its sport.
