"Great" news - the UFC is gearing up for yet another rematch

I guess all the criticism the UFC has faced for feeding the fans rematch after rematch has had no effect.

The latest news is that after Tito Ortiz faces and (as the UFC seems to presume) beats Ken Shamrock in their rematch, and Chuck Liddell faces and (as the UFC seems to presume) beats Renato "Babalu" Sobral in their rematch, Liddell and Ortiz will fight each other in yet another rematch.

Besides the fact that the problem of the lack of new championship-level talent in the UFC is well past critical, the UFC faces another problem succinctly summarized by a Vince McMahon: "It could be difficult for [UFC] going forward because they’re in a situation much like boxing where they don’t control the outcomes of their events. They don’t quite know what they’re doing in terms of building characters.”

Of course the fact that the UFC does not control the outcome of its fights has not deterred its management from trying to control the American MMA market like a wanna-be WWE. But I digress.

Can you imagine what will happen if Shamrock or Babalu wins his next fight? The UFC's plans would go into the toilet and the fans would be denied the chance to see yet another rematch. Hmmm . . . Come to think of it, that might not be a problem after all.

Update 6/21: Sadly, "Anonymous" is probably right when he points out in the comments that, "If Sobral beats Liddell you know Liddell will be given an instant rematch. Moreover, I have to think that if Shamrock beats Ortiz they will also have a 3rd match as well."

Jeff,

If Sobral beats Liddell you know Liddell will be given an instant rematch. Moreover, I have to think that if Shamrock beats Ortiz they will also have a 3rd match as well.

I would not be surprised if UFC is hoping for a Hughes loss in the GSP vs Hughes 2 match so they can feed it again for the 3rd time followed by GSP vs BJ Penn 2 and a 3rd match if BJ manages to win the rematch. The merry-go-round of rematches as headliners is getting ready to begin.

If the rematches are the best available fights then I say keep 'em coming.
