Mixed martial arts rising up to take the place of boxing?

That is the opinion of The Easterner Online, the official school paper of Eastern Washington University:

As the world of professional boxing fades into obscurity through the frauds of shady promoters, another sport is rising up to take its place.

Mixed martial arts, a hybrid of fighting styles including Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling has sparked a spectator phenomena.

It is now considered one of the fastest growing sports in the world, said Derek Cleveland, a mixed martial arts promoter in Idaho.

While I love the author’s enthusiasm, I think he is being just a tad bit optimistic about MMA surpassing boxing in popularity. But, hey, I would love to be proven wrong.
