FORMER K-1 PRESIDENT ARRESTED: Kazuyohsi Ishi, the former president of K-1 who recently resigned because of alleged legal problems, has been arrested for tax evasion.

With Ishi’s arrest, the apparent suicide of Pride president Nayoto Morishita and the apparent money problems at Pride, the largest Japanese fight promotions have been taken quite a few blows lately. For a long time, Japanese-centric fight fans have loved to rub the world’s noses in the success of Pride and K-1, and loudly proclaim that the Japanese promotions had brought their sports to a higher level. But, even if the mighty have not fallen, they have at least been taken down a few notches.

Nevertheless, with Japan’s broader fan base, I expect to continue to see big money dropped into MMA in the land of the rising sun.
