Is Melendez next for Gomi?

At the Pride post fight press conference this weekend, Pride’s president Nobuyuki Sakakibara said that Takanori Gomi may defend his title against Marcus Aurelio (who defeated Gomi in a non-title fight in April) or team Cesar Gracie fighter Gilbert Melendez. Graciefighter.com, which is affiliated with the Cesar Gracie fight team (and which lacks links to individual stories), has already begun hyping the possible matchup.

Melendez is an impressive 11-0, he beat Nobuhiro Obiyam the previously undefeated Deep champ at this weekend’s Pride Bushido show and he has a victory over Rumina Sato. But, I would like to see him get just a bit more seasoning before he takes on Gomi. It looks like Melendez feels the same way too, since immediately after the fight he said that he does not want to fight Gomi “tomorrow,” but would rather earn the matchup with a few more victories.

Remember, however, that funny things happen to those types of attitudes when an offer to fight is laid on the table. So, be sure to stay tuned . . .
